Ryan Schmid, CEO Vera Whole Health, spoke with James Davis, Editor, HR Daily Advisor about the value of coaching as part of the primary care team. Among the topics they discussed were that primary care is a loss leader in the current healthcare system and providers have an average of 7 minutes with patients, not nearly enough time to explore the factors underlying the presenting health issue.

Schmid shared how Vera Whole Health coaches, trained in empathetic listening, have a very meaningful impact on the outcomes for a patient and for a population.

Coaches play a different role than primary care physicians, "but ultimately, they work on the same game plan. The idea is that so much of our health is driven by lifestyle. The reality is, changing behaviors is really difficult," Schmid says.
